Uniform Information:
This Information covers the uniform and handbook requirements for:
Tigers (Grade 1)
Wolves (Grade 2)
Bears (Grade 3)
WEBELOS (Grades 4 & 5) wearing blue shirts.
Please remember that blue pants are part of the uniform, and that scouts should not wear jeans to scouting
events where uniforms are worn.
Every boy needs the following items:
(1) a blue uniform shirt;
(2) a cub scout belt and belt buckle;
(3) a Northeast Illinois Council patch;
(4) a red and white pack number 5 patch;
(5) a den number patch (the pack will provide new Tiger scouts (first grade) with a den numeral patch after den
assignments are made);
(6) a 55 year veteran unit bar patch;
(7) a purple scouting world crest patch;
(8) a neckerchief (varies by rank);
(9) a neckerchief slide (varies by rank) (consider purchasing a spare since they are inexpensive and very
easily lost);
(10) a hat (varies by rank)
(11) a red vest;
(12) a circle Northeast Illinois Council patch for the center of the back of the red vest; and
(13) blue pants.
Note: The Scout Shop sells official blue cub scout pants. The official blue pants are not a required part of the
Pack 5 cub scout uniform. They are optional. However, many families choose to purchase the official pants
when their son joins cub scouts, but not replace them with official pants when he grows out of the official pants.
Each scout also needs a handbook (varies by rank).
The handbook contains a section showing the placement of the patches. I'm also attaching a .pdf file that
illustrates patch placement.
Note for WEBELOS I (4th grade): In addition to the above, WEBELOS I in 4th grade need to purchase a
WEBELOS colors ribbon strip which is worn on the right sleeve of the uniform. Activity badges are pinned onto
these ribbons as they are earned.
Lastly, WEBELOS scouts may wear a tan shirt and olive pants instead of the blue shirt and blue pants if they
wish. If your son has outgrown his blue uniform by the time he reaches 4th grade, or if your son joins Pack 5 in
4th grade, you are better off purchasing a tan shirt and olive pants since your son can wear them in boy scouts
too.
The best place to purchase these items is at the Northeast Illinois Council Scout Shop, located at 2745 Skokie
Valley Road (41 North) in Highland Park. It is just north of Half Day Road on the east side of the street. The
phone number for the store is (847) 433-1813 ext. 630. The store employees are very knowledgeable and will
help you find everything you need.

The Red Vest:
The red vest is worn over the blue uniform shirt. The Northeast Illinois Council patch for the center of the back
of the red vest at each Pack event the scout attends, he will earn a "segment" - a small patch whose picture
represents the activity of that pack event. These segments serve to remind the scout of the fun they had at that
Pack event. These segments are sewn in a circle outside the NIC patch (in ever increasing concentric circles).
The entire vest can then serve as a reminder of all the fun the scout has had over the years.
